Don’t hold me accountable if it doesn’t work for you. The solution: Migrating only Mail to the new MacĪ word of caution: This procedure worked for me. With a new install there is no mail anymore. With Migration Assistant mail gets transferred 1:1. This is such a comfortable thing to have 15 years of emails available at all times. It is not polluting my inbox anymore, but it’s still searchable in Mail. After the end of each year I grab all the mails from the inbox and put them in a newly created year folder (2021 e.g.). It is private and I want full control over it, so I use POP3 and have old mails on one of my Macs. What about mail? I’ve been storing mail in local folders on a yearly basis. BTW why are settings not stored in iCloud?). OK, back to the issue at hand: We have a new system, download the software and configure some special custom settings (key shortcuts and other system and application preferences. ![]() ![]() No software, no settings, no data, no favorites… Hours and hours of setup time. Win got corrupt in such unpredictable ways and migration routines just didn’t work as expected. Previously, on Windows, that was not an option. It is my first time using this approach since 2005. So why bother migrating all the old crap, if you can have a clean install. Nowadays, most of my documents, passwords and settings are in iCloud because of the many Apple devices that I use all the time. But migrating that broken system to a fresh new MacBook? Not so much! I like to work from Docker containers so that was not a huge issue. On my old Mac suddenly AWS CLI suddenly stopped working and I was unable to quickly repair it using homebrew, pypi or any other approach. Old software and other stuff you were piling on your system. The downside: you are always carrying old crap with you. You basically end up with a 1:1 system after the migration. If you add a password to a presentation on one device, it’s required to open the presentation on all your devices. When you buy a new Mac there is an easy way to migrate all of you data, programs, settings, logins: Just use the Migration Assistant. If you use folders to organize your presentations, the same folder organization applies on all your devices. You can tap the shared link again to add the presentation back to your iCloud Drive, where it becomes available on all your computers and devices that have iCloud turned on. Deleting a presentation that someone shared with you removes it from your iCloud Drive and from Keynote on all your devices. If you delete it on only the device you’re using, it appears in the presentation manager with an iCloud badge in the corner tap the thumbnail to download the presentation again. If you delete a presentation, you can choose whether to delete it from Keynote on all your devices or only the one you’re using. (This applies only to presentations not shared with others). If you do get a conflict, you can choose to preserve any or all of the versions. If you edit a presentation on multiple computers or devices and don’t allow time for your edits to sync, you will see conflicts. The next time you connect to the internet, the edited presentation is saved in iCloud Drive. If you edit and then close a presentation when you’re not connected to the internet, you see a cloud icon on the presentation thumbnail.
